The reading of wedding vows is one of the ceremony’s most anticipated moments – and we know how many doubts the bride and the groom can have about this! That is why I decided to use my experience as a bilingual wedding celebrant (we’re based in Brasil and often we celebrate in more than one language) to put together some valuable pointers to make your wedding vows even more memorable and touching.
Love is so transforming and unique that trying to put the reasons why we love someone in writing can be quite a challenging task, but no doubt a rewarding one! Here at Rito Cerimônias® we have a selection of several different ways to make it happen, and we advise our couples to choose the style that best matches their personality, whether they are shy or more outgoing.
VOWS: TIPS TO A SMOOTHER START
The first sentence is always the hardest, isn’t it? In order to put you at ease regarding the content of such a unique text, we have come up with a template, allowing you to edit and create your own wedding vows using a model to guide you. To receive this bit of love in your mailbox just fill out the form at the end of the post. Hope you love it as we do 🙂
For those who doesn’t feel comfortable speaking in public, here at Rito Cerimônias® we often write some cute sentences that go with the bride and the groom, and it’s also our role as a bilingual wedding celebrant, to “whisper”, at the right time, the wedding vows so that the couple can repeat after us, sentence by sentence, very slowly. They can also choose to answer a few customized questions to which they simply reply “yes” and that’s it: Our mission is to ensure that the couple feels utterly comfortable with their choice.
Most people still prefer the customized model in which the bride and the groom write their own wedding vows to read during the wedding ceremony. Intending to offer some insight for those who don’t really know where to begin, we have gathered some tips to inspire you!

WEDDING VOWS: USEFUL ADVICE
be yourself
You are loved precisely because of who you are – never forget that! Which means that if you are naturally a fun person, there is no reason to write your wedding vows in a solemn tone. It’s to you, just the way you are, that the other person is marrying.
Your wedding ceremony doesn’t have to be a perfect performance, quite the contrary: Everyone there is solely interested in sharing your happiness, not watching a spectacle.
less is more
Don’t worry about writing a long text: The ideal length for your vows is about one page long – if for nothing else, so you won’t have to hold on to a bunch of papers when it’s time to talk!
If you use narrow margins and Arial 16, a full page will be just the right amount.
However, keep in mind that these rules aren’t set in stone: Less is more, and a beautiful 10-line paragraph is also excellent!
tip sheet
Have it all in writing. Even if you are used to public speaking and prefer speaking from the heart rather than reading, we recommend you also write the vows down and hold on to a “cheat sheet” for the big day – your wedding is a unique moment, and it might be difficult to foresee how emotional you will get. Moreover, it can be reassuring to know you covered all the bases in case the text slips from your mind.
In fact, at Rito we offer our couples the courtesy of printing out the vows so that no one has to worry about it on the wedding day!
